Payroll Specialist/Accounting Clerk

CM Legal

A California law firm focused on education law is seeking a Payroll Specialist/Accounting Clerk for its San Francisco office. The firm represents school and community college districts across the state, and this role offers a chance to join a team that supports the education of students in California.

The Payroll Specialist/Accounting Clerk will own payroll from start to finish. That includes processing semi-monthly payroll, keeping the payroll system accurate, and maintaining all required records. On the accounting side, the role processes invoices, expense reimbursements, and vendor payments, and reconciles records for accuracy. It also runs the firm’s credit card program: issuing and canceling cards, managing the related invoices, and looking into unauthorized charges. The role works closely with internal departments, management, vendors, and clients, backs up the department as needed, and handles firm mail.

Candidates should have at least five years of recent payroll processing experience on a system such as Paycom, ADP, or Paychex, plus at least two years of accounts payable experience. They should also know California wage and hour laws and payroll taxes. Law firm experience and familiarity with SurePoint, Aderant, or Elite are preferred. A high school diploma or GED is required, and an associate’s degree is preferred. The role requires travel to the East Bay office once a week through December 31, 2026. The hourly range is $40.00–$50.00, with comprehensive benefits.
