The Staff Attorney / Senior Staff Attorney (Immigrant Justice) provides legal representation and rapid-response support to immigrant communities impacted by changing immigration policies. This role focuses on representing detained clients in urgent matters before immigration courts (EOIR) and federal district courts, including filing motions to reopen, stays of removal, and habeas petitions. The attorney also supports intake and triage of detained referrals, collaborates with internal teams and external partners, and responds directly to enforcement actions (e.g., ICE activity) by providing on-site support, guidance, and documentation.
Additional responsibilities include developing systems, materials, and trainings to address urgent community needs, staying current on immigration law developments, assisting with media responses, and representing the organization at meetings and coalitions. The role requires strong collaboration across legal, communications, and leadership teams.
Candidates must have a Juris Doctor (JD) and at least 1–2 years of immigration law experience (4+ years for Senior level), with preference for removal defense and federal court experience. Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish is required. Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to work in a fast-paced, community-focused nonprofit environment.
This is a hybrid role based in Chicago with on-site and rapid-response requirements. Salary ranges from $70,000–$80,000 (Staff Attorney) or $80,000–$90,000 (Senior Staff Attorney), depending on experience, plus comprehensive benefits.
